Line Drivers

Line drivers are a term used in the world of radio. It is not to be confused with a line drive, which is a baseball term. Instead a line driver is something that dictates the place that signals go when they leave the hub in a stereo. The stereo breaks the signal into pieces. Have you ever noticed that some speakers are different sizes and that if you get close, you can tell which speakers have which sounds coming from them? The line driver info is what handles this set up. The sounds come in various frequencies ranging from very high-pitched – usually voices – to very low-pitched bass sounds.

How They Work

The same speakers cannot handle all of these frequencies with the same precision. Each speaker is in essence assigned a frequency. The problem is that all of these speakers have wires going into the main area of the stereo system. How do they know where to go? The line drivers tell them. The line drivers basically let the sounds know where they should go and then put them in the right spot. Having enough line drivers with the right capabilities is very important when you are putting together your stereo system.

Ohms

You can get a line driver with various ohm capacities. The ohm reading will tell you basically how strong your line driver will be. While you may think that you need to get a higher ohm reading, that may not be the case. For a simple set up, a 50-ohm line driver may do the trick just fine. If you have only one or two speakers, then the sounds will not be broken up much. For people with higher-capacity stereos, though, the 600-ohm line driver may be more what they need. Making sure that you get the right ohm readout is very important. Otherwise you will have distorted sound on one hand and equipment not able to work to its capacity on the other.

Special Products

If you don’t know much about stereos, never fear. The line driver will come with the system. If you want to change it up, however, you can look for certain brands, such as the Kove KA-6 Line Driver. Buying your own line driver will help to make sure that you will like what you are getting and that you know it will be the best choice for your stereo needs.
