Power Adaptors

Power adaptors are used to get power from one place to another. Power, or current, is what allows electronic gizmos to work. An adaptor will allow you to get one machine to work with another or to use alternate sources of power. For example, a cell phone adaptor will allow you to plug into the cigarette lighter in your car and use the phone. The lighter’s purpose is not to operate battery-powered electronics items, but it will work that way using the adaptor.

AC Adaptors

AC adaptors are the most common type of adaptor. The AC adaptor is used in all types of situations to allow for one item to be used in different circumstances than originally intended. The portable CD AC adaptor is probably the most common of these types of adaptors. Of course, called by their technical name, these items are car power inverters, but “adaptor” seems to be the common usage name. An iPod car adaptor is another type of adaptor that works like the cell phone adaptor by allowing the iPod to work in the car.

Inverters

Another type of adaptor converts AC current to DC current. This type of adaptor is called a power inverter. The typical purpose of power inverters is to charge the batteries in items such as remote controlled cars or with items that need rechargeable batteries. You can build a power inverter if you would like, but it is not a task for people who are good with electronics. Going out and getting a Trip Lite power inverter may be a better option. If you want an inverter, you should make sure that you get one that will have enough power to charge whatever you have that will need it. An inverter that is not powerful enough will give you a poor charge, which will mean you have to recharge continually.

Vector Inverters

There are other types of adaptors and inverters out there as well. DC/AC power inverters, for instance, change direct current, such as that found in batteries to alternating current, like that needed to run items. A vector power inverter is another choice as well. Vector power inverters often are portable. This means that you can take them with you anywhere you go. You are not tied to making sure that you have electrical outlets available to you to be able to use your equipment. This option is great for something like an air compressor power inverter because you usually need your air compressor in less-than-ideal circumstances.
